Cheap Flights from Chicago — The Midwest's Underrated Gateway

Bryan MendezJan 20265 min read

Here is something most people do not know: Chicago to Warsaw on LOT Polish Airlines routinely goes for $400-500 round-trip in shoulder season. Four hundred dollars to Eastern Europe from the middle of the United States. From Warsaw, you can be in Krakow for $20, Prague for $25, Budapest for $30 on a budget carrier. That math changes everything about how Midwesterners should think about international travel.

O'Hare is massive, United has a fortress hub, and the competition from European and Middle Eastern carriers keeps prices honest. If you live anywhere between the Rockies and the Appalachians, Chicago is probably your best bet for getting overseas on a budget.

Two Airports, Clear Roles

ORD (O'Hare) — Everything international. United hub. LOT Polish, Icelandair, Turkish Airlines, Aer Lingus, Emirates. Blue Line to downtown costs $2.50 and takes 45 minutes. Terminal 5 for international is a serious trek from domestic terminals — budget 90+ minutes for connections.

MDW (Midway) — Southwest's hub. Budget domestic carriers and some Mexico/Caribbean. Orange Line to downtown, $2.50, 30 minutes. Smaller and less soul-crushing than O'Hare.

Chicago to Europe — Eastern Europe Is Your Secret Weapon

Underrated transatlantic market. Particularly strong for Eastern European connections that cost a fortune from other US cities.

What You Should Expect to Pay (Round-Trip)

  • Jan-Mar: $350-550 — $400-500

  • Apr-Jun: $450-700 — $500-600

  • Jul-Aug: $600-900 — $650-800

  • Sep-Nov: $350-600 — $400-500

The Airlines Worth Knowing

LOT Polish (Star Alliance) — Direct ORD to Warsaw. This is the route. Often $400-500 round-trip in shoulder season. Warsaw is a gateway to everywhere in Eastern Europe — Wizz Air and Ryanair will take you anywhere from there for pocket change.

Icelandair — ORD to Reykjavik. Free Iceland stopover. Solid connections to Scandinavia and the UK.

Turkish Airlines — Via Istanbul to everywhere. Excellent value for the Mediterranean, the Balkans, and honestly most of Europe. Istanbul itself is worth the layover.

Aer Lingus — Direct to Dublin. US preclearance in Dublin means you skip immigration when you get home. That alone is worth something.

Gateway Strategy

  • Warsaw: $400-550 — Balkans, Baltics, Central Europe

  • Reykjavik: $380-500 — Scandinavia, UK

  • Dublin: $420-580 — UK, Western Europe

  • Istanbul: $500-700 — Greece, Balkans, anywhere

Sample Itineraries

Eastern Europe Loop (3 weeks) — ORD to Warsaw ($450 on LOT). Train to Krakow, bus to Prague, train to Budapest. Return from Warsaw. Total flights around $550.

Scandinavia + Baltics (3 weeks) — ORD to Reykjavik ($400). Copenhagen, Stockholm, Tallinn, Riga. Return via Reykjavik. Total flights around $600.

Chicago to Southeast Asia — The Long Way Around

What You Should Expect to Pay (Round-Trip)

  • Jan-Apr: $650-950 — $700-850

  • May-Sep: $600-850 — $650-750

  • Oct-Dec: $700-1000 — $750-900

How to Route It

Via Middle East — Turkish Airlines through Istanbul, Emirates through Dubai, Qatar through Doha. Often $650-800 to Bangkok or Singapore. Usually the best value.

Via Europe — Fly LOT or Icelandair to Europe, then grab a Scoot or AirAsia X flight to Asia. Two tickets sometimes cheaper than one.

Via Pacific — United to Tokyo via their partner hub. ANA and JAL connections. Easy to add a Japan stopover.

Sample Itineraries

SEA Grand Tour (5 weeks) — ORD to Bangkok via Istanbul ($700). Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos. Return via Istanbul. Total flights around $900.

Asia Multi-Stop (4 weeks) — ORD to Tokyo ($700 on United). Bangkok ($180 onward). Malaysia, Singapore. Return via Tokyo. Total flights around $1000.

Chicago to Latin America — Mexico Is Easy, South America Takes Work

What You Should Expect to Pay (Round-Trip)

  • Mexico: $200-400 — Any

  • Central America: $300-500 — Jan-Apr, Sep-Nov

  • Colombia: $350-550 — Any

  • Peru/Southern SA: $500-800 — Mar-Nov

Airlines That Work

Volaris / VivaAerobus — Ultra-low-cost to Mexico. Sub-$200 round-trips happen. VivaAerobus will test your patience, but the price makes it worth it.

United / American — Direct to Mexico City and Cancun. Good connections to Central and South America.

Avianca — Via Bogota to South America. Reliable LATAM network.

Copa — Via Panama City. Best for hitting multiple South American destinations.

Sample Itineraries

Mexico + Central America (4 weeks) — ORD to Mexico City ($250). Oaxaca by bus, overland to Guatemala, Honduras. Fly home from Cancun. Total flights around $450.

South America Explorer (6 weeks) — ORD to Bogota ($400). Medellin, Quito, Lima, La Paz. Return from Bogota. Total flights around $700.

Chicago-Specific Moves

LOT Polish is the cheat code — Chicago to Warsaw is consistently one of the cheapest transatlantic routes from the US. Use Warsaw as your Europe entry point.

Midway for Mexico — Southwest and Spirit from MDW often undercut ORD pricing on Mexican destinations.

Brutal winters, aggressive deals — Airlines price aggressively in January and February to fill planes while Chicago is uninhabitable. Take advantage.
