Cheap Flights from Miami — The Undisputed Latin America Gateway

Bryan MendezJan 20266 min read

I flew Spirit from Fort Lauderdale to Bogota for $178 round-trip. One hundred and seventy-eight dollars. The seat did not recline, the flight attendant looked like she had given up on joy approximately three years ago, and I landed in Colombia having spent less than my phone bill. This is what Miami does. No other US city comes close for Latin America and Caribbean flights — not in price, not in frequency, not in sheer number of routes.

If you are heading anywhere south of Texas, Miami is where you want to be standing when you open a flight search.

Two Airports, One Strategy

MIA (Miami International) — The international heavyweight. Unrivaled Latin America connectivity — LATAM, Avianca, Copa, Iberia, and American's massive hub presence. Metrorail to downtown costs $2.25 and takes 15 minutes.

FLL (Fort Lauderdale) — The budget carrier stronghold. Spirit and JetBlue live here, and they beat MIA prices by $100-200 routinely for Caribbean and Latin America routes. Tri-Rail plus a connection runs about $5-7 and takes 45 minutes to Miami.

Always check FLL. I cannot stress this enough. The 30-minute drive from Miami to Fort Lauderdale has saved me more money than any other travel decision I have ever made.

Miami to Latin America — The Main Event

Miami has more Latin American flights than anywhere else in the United States. That is not marketing — that is just a schedule board.

What You Should Expect to Pay (Round-Trip)

  • Caribbean: $150-350 — Any — slight summer dip

  • Central America: $200-400 — Jan-Apr, Sep-Nov

  • Colombia: $200-400 — Any

  • Peru/Ecuador: $300-550 — Mar-Nov

  • Brazil: $350-600 — Mar-May, Aug-Nov

  • Argentina/Chile: $450-750 — Mar-May, Sep-Nov

Airlines by Region

Caribbean — JetBlue, Spirit out of FLL, Caribbean Airlines. Direct to Havana, San Juan, Jamaica, Bahamas, Dominican Republic, and 30+ islands. This is not a route list — it is a menu.

Central America — Avianca (hubs in San Salvador and Bogota), Copa (Panama City hub), Spirit for budget. Direct to Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama.

Colombia — This is Miami's sweet spot. Avianca from Bogota hub. Spirit to Bogota, Medellin, Cartagena. JetBlue to Bogota and Cartagena. Ten-plus daily flights across multiple carriers. Wait for a sale or use Spirit and you will rarely pay over $300 round-trip.

Brazil — LATAM, Gol, Azul. Direct to Sao Paulo, Rio, Brasilia. Often cheaper than you would expect for the distance.

Southern South America — LATAM via their Lima hub connects everywhere. Avianca and Copa for connections. American/LATAM codeshares fill in the gaps.

Gateway Strategy

  • Bogota: $200-350 — Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela

  • Panama City: $250-400 — All Central/South America

  • Lima: $350-500 — Bolivia, Chile, Argentina

  • Sao Paulo: $400-550 — Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay

  • Cartagena: $200-300 — Beach base + Colombia exploration

Sample Itineraries

Colombia Deep Dive (3 weeks) — MIA to Bogota ($250 on Spirit). Medellin, Coffee Region, Cartagena. Return direct. Total flights around $350.

South America Grand Tour (8 weeks) — MIA to Lima ($380). Cusco, La Paz, Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Santiago. Return via Lima. Total flights around $700.

Central America Overland (5 weeks) — MIA to Guatemala City ($220). Bus through Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama. Fly Panama City to MIA ($180). Total flights around $400.

Caribbean Island Hop (2 weeks) — MIA to San Juan ($120). Ferry to St. Thomas, boat to Tortola, back to San Juan. Total flights around $200 plus ferries.

Miami to Europe — Iberia's Secret Weapon

What You Should Expect to Pay (Round-Trip)

  • Jan-Mar: $380-580 — $420-500

  • Apr-Jun: $480-750 — $520-650

  • Jul-Aug: $600-950 — $680-850

  • Sep-Nov: $400-620 — $450-550

How to Route It

Iberia — MIA to Madrid direct. Best for Spain, Portugal, and connecting onward. Oneworld connections to the rest of Europe.

TAP Portugal — Via Lisbon. Stopover program gives you free time in Portugal. Often cheapest to Western Europe overall.

Via NYC — Position to JFK for more budget transatlantic options. JetBlue or Spirit from MIA to JFK is cheap.

Sample Itineraries

Iberian Peninsula (2 weeks) — MIA to Madrid ($450 on Iberia). Barcelona, Lisbon, Porto. Return from Madrid. Total flights around $550.

Budget Europe via Positioning (3 weeks) — FLL to JFK ($80). Dublin ($320). London, Paris, Amsterdam. Return via JFK. Total flights around $550.

Miami to Southeast Asia — Not Ideal, But Doable

Expect $700-1100 round-trip any time of year. Route through the Middle East — Emirates via Dubai or Qatar via Doha, usually $750-950 to Bangkok or Singapore. Alternatively, fly Iberia to Madrid and book a separate ticket to Asia from there.

Sample Route (4 weeks) — MIA to Bangkok via Dubai ($800). Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam. Return via Dubai. Total flights around $1000.

Miami-Specific Moves

The Spirit FLL advantage — Spirit's Fort Lauderdale hub offers some of the cheapest Caribbean and Latin America fares in existence. Worth the extra 30 minutes every single time.

Colombia is a gold mine — Ten-plus daily flights between Miami and Colombia across multiple carriers. Competition keeps prices insanely low. If you see anything under $250 round-trip, book it.

The Lima hub play — Going deep into South America? MIA to Lima on LATAM, then book a separate ticket from Lima. Often cheaper than one itinerary.

Hurricane season caveat — June through November can see flight disruptions. Book flexible fares or avoid Caribbean during peak storm months (August through October).
