The problem

The €21 Flight That Costs You More

London Stansted to Faro. April. €21 one-way. That price lands in your lap on a Tuesday evening and you buy the ticket before finishing your pint. Three days later you’re in the Algarve, sunburned and confused about why your “cheap trip to Portugal” is costing more than your mate’s week in Lisbon.

We pulled real pricing data across four Portuguese cities—flights from 19 European origins plus hostel rates for every listed dorm bed—and the numbers tell a story the budget airlines would rather you didn’t see.

Faro has the most expensive hostels in Portugal. Not by a little—by a lot. The average dorm bed costs $23.60/night, roughly 23% more than Lisbon ($19.23) and 25% more than Porto ($19.34). Lagos, just an hour west along the Algarve coast, averages $18.94.

⚠️
The core problem: Faro’s average hostel dorm ($23.60/night) is the most expensive in Portugal. On a 5-night trip, you’ll spend $22 more on accommodation than in Lisbon—wiping out any flight savings.

Where Faro IS and ISN’T Cheapest

We queried round-trip fares from 19 European cities to all three Portuguese airports. The headline result: Faro’s flight-price advantage is real but razor-thin. Across all origins, Faro averages €74, Lisbon €76, Porto €76—a gap of roughly €2.

From the UK and Ireland, Faro wins almost every route. From southern and central Europe, it loses. The table below splits it cleanly.

Where the trap closes

The Hostel Math

Faro’s hostel market is tiny—13 properties versus 81 in Lisbon and 82 in Porto. Low supply, high tourist demand, and the Algarve’s seasonal pricing all push dorm rates up. The average Faro dorm costs $23.60/night. Lisbon averages $19.23. That’s a $4.37/night penalty.

💡
Break-even point: 1.8 nights. If your Faro flight is €8 cheaper than Lisbon, the hostel premium wipes that out after fewer than 2 nights. Any trip longer than a weekend costs more via Faro.

Even from London Stansted—where Faro has its biggest flight advantage—Lisbon comes out $15 cheaper over 5 nights, and Lagos saves you $23.

The smarter move

The Lagos Hack

Lagos uses the same airport (FAO) as Faro. You get the exact same cheap flight, then hop a €5 bus or €15 transfer to Lagos—where hostels are cheaper, better-rated, and more plentiful. It’s 20 more hostels, a higher average rating (8.8 vs 8.2), and dorm beds starting at $5.00.

Same flight price. Better hostels. Better beaches. The only trade-off is a bus ride.

Timing matters

The Seasonal Trap

Faro’s flight prices swing wildly by month. In April you’ll find €43 average fares; by July that jumps to €108. Lisbon’s curve is flatter. Here’s the month-by-month comparison:

Faro is cheapest in the shoulder season (March–June, September–October). In peak summer (July–August) and winter holidays (November–December), Lisbon undercuts it. Even in the months where Faro flights win, the hostel premium still erases most of the saving.

Only 5 of 13 hostels come in under $20/night. Three are above $30. The market is thin and expensive by Portuguese standards.

The verdict

What to Do Instead

✈️
Flying from the UK or Ireland? Book the cheap Faro flight but stay in Lagos instead. Same airport, better hostels, better beaches. The €5 bus to Lagos pays for itself on night one.
🇪🇸
Flying from Spain, France, or Italy? Skip Faro entirely. Fly direct to Lisbon or Porto—flights are cheaper from southern Europe, and hostels are cheaper, better-rated, and far more plentiful.
🏖️
Insist on Faro? Book Hostellicious ($14.70, rated 9.1) or Hi Faro Pousada De Juventude ($17.50). Travel in April when flights average €43. Avoid July–August when flights spike to €100+ and dorm prices follow.
