London Stansted to Faro. April. EUR 21. One way. I saw that price on my phone at a pub in Shoreditch and bought the ticket before finishing my pint. (To be fair, at London beer prices, I should have been more careful with every dollar.) Three days later I was in the Algarve, sunburned and confused about why my "cheap trip to Portugal" was costing more than my friend's week in Lisbon.
That confusion is the Faro Trap -- and once you see the data, you will never fall for it again.
Budget airline search engines love Faro. It appears at the top of every "cheapest flights from London" list. And the flights are genuinely cheap. We queried 600 real flight prices from 20 European cities and cross-referenced them with hostel data for every Portuguese destination. The result: Faro's cheap flights are a mirage. Here is the math, and what to do instead.
The Flight Data: 600 Prices, 20 Origins, 3 Portuguese Destinations
We searched for the cheapest one-way flight from each of 20 major European cities to Faro (FAO), Lisbon (LIS), and Porto (OPO) across 10 dates spanning March to December 2026.
Overall Averages
**Faro (FAO):** EUR 74 — EUR 72 — EUR 19 — EUR 183 — 200
**Lisbon (LIS):** EUR 76 — EUR 76 — EUR 19 — EUR 155 — 200
**Porto (OPO):** EUR 76 — EUR 74 — EUR 17 — EUR 188 — 200
On average, Faro is cheapest -- but by EUR 2. That is not meaningful. The cheapest single flight in our entire dataset is actually to Porto (EUR 17).
Where Faro Really Is Cheapest: Northern Europe
The "cheap Faro flight" reputation comes from one corridor: the UK and Ireland.
**London Stansted:** EUR 56 — EUR 63 — EUR 69 — EUR +8 vs LIS
**London Luton:** EUR 57 — EUR 67 — EUR 77 — EUR +10 vs LIS
**Edinburgh:** EUR 66 — EUR 86 — EUR 94 — EUR +20 vs LIS
**Manchester:** EUR 65 — EUR 73 — EUR 70 — EUR +8 vs LIS
**Frankfurt:** EUR 77 — EUR 104 — EUR 97 — EUR +26 vs LIS
Where Faro Is NOT Cheapest: Iberia
If you are already in Spain or Italy, flying to Faro makes no financial sense.
**Madrid:** EUR 44 — EUR 29 — EUR -14
**Barcelona:** EUR 60 — EUR 40 — EUR -20
**Milan Bergamo:** EUR 67 — EUR 54 — EUR -12
From Barcelona, Lisbon is EUR 20 cheaper than Faro. The "cheap Faro" narrative does not survive south of the Pyrenees.
The Hostel Math: Where the Trap Snaps Shut
Here is every Portuguese city in our hostel database:
**Faro: 13 — $23.60** — 8.2 — $14.70 — $38.23 — FAO
**Lagos:** 20 — $18.94 — 8.8 — $5.00 — $30.00 — FAO
**Lisbon:** 81 — $19.23 — 9.3 — $9.05 — $59.85 — LIS
**Porto:** 82 — $19.34 — 9.2 — $9.07 — $47.50 — OPO
Three things jump out:
1. Faro is the most expensive. At $23.60/night, Faro dorms cost 23% more than Lisbon ($19.23) and 25% more than Lagos ($18.94).
2. Faro has the fewest hostels. 13 versus 81 in Lisbon, 82 in Porto, and 20 in nearby Lagos. Low competition means higher prices -- we see this pattern globally.
3. Faro has the lowest ratings. 8.2 versus 9.3 in Lisbon. You pay more and get less.
The Break-Even Calculation
Flying from London Stansted:
Flight savings: EUR 8 (EUR 56 to FAO vs EUR 63 to LIS)
Hostel premium: $4.37/night (Faro $23.60 vs Lisbon $19.23)
Break-even: 1.8 nights
By night two, your cheap flight has been erased. On a 5-night trip, you paid EUR 8 less for the flight and $21.85 more for hostels. Net loss: roughly $14.
The 5-Night Comparison: Faro vs Lisbon vs Lagos
Cheapest flight: EUR 56 — EUR 63 — EUR 56 + bus
5 nights' accommodation: $118.00 — $96.15 — $94.70
Bus from FAO: -- — -- — EUR 3-21
**Total: ~$175 — ~$159 — ~$156-174**
Lisbon wins for a 5-night trip, even with a higher flight price. Lagos -- same airport -- beats Faro on accommodation while matching it on flights.
The Lagos Play: Same Airport, Better Everything
This is the detail most travelers miss: Lagos and Faro share the same airport (FAO).
Lagos sits 90 km west of Faro. Better beaches. Stronger backpacker scene. More hostels (20 vs 13). And $4.66 cheaper per night.
Airport: FAO — FAO (same)
Hostels: 13 — 20
Avg dorm: $23.60 — $18.94
Avg rating: 8.2 — 8.8
Min dorm: $14.70 — $5.00
Bus from FAO: -- — EUR 3-21
Lagos also has the cheapest bed in our Portuguese data at $5.00/night. The bus from Faro Airport costs EUR 3-21. Even at the high end, the transport cost is recovered in one night of hostel savings.
The Seasonal Trap: When Cheap Flights Become Expensive Flights
Faro's flight prices swing hard by season, and summer -- when you most want to go -- is when the advantage disappears.
**March:** EUR 62 — EUR 72 — Yes
**April:** EUR 43 — EUR 55 — Yes
**May:** EUR 67 — EUR 76 — Yes
**June:** EUR 67 — EUR 70 — Yes
**July: EUR 108 — EUR 101 — No**
**August: EUR 92 — EUR 91 — No**
**September:** EUR 66 — EUR 71 — Yes
**October:** EUR 75 — EUR 81 — Yes
**November: EUR 78 — EUR 69 — No**
**December: EUR 84 — EUR 77 — No**
In July and August, Faro flights are MORE expensive than Lisbon. The "cheap Faro flight" is a shoulder-season phenomenon. During peak summer, Lisbon is cheaper to fly to AND cheaper to stay in. The Goldilocks month for Faro -- if you insist -- is April.

Hostellicious is the clear value winner. If you are staying in Faro, that is your spot. But also -- watch out for the bait-and-switch effect. Some of these hostels show up in our worst-offenders data with extreme price swings.
What the Data Says to Do Instead
Flying from the UK or Ireland:
Book the cheap Faro flight -- it genuinely is cheapest from UK origins
Take the EUR 3-21 bus to Lagos instead of staying in Faro
Save $4.66/night with better ratings and more hostel choice
Or bus to Lisbon for 81 hostels and $4.37/night savings
Flying from Spain, France, or Italy:
Skip Faro entirely -- fly direct to Lisbon or Porto
Flights are EUR 9-20 cheaper to LIS from these origins
You get 6x more hostel choice and higher ratings
If you insist on Faro:
Go in April -- cheapest flights and shoulder-season hostel prices
Book Hostellicious ($14.70, 9.1 rating)
Avoid July-August -- flights and prices spike together
Never book Faro from Barcelona or Madrid -- LIS is EUR 14-20 cheaper
The Bottom Line
The Faro trap works like this: search engines optimize for flight price. They show you EUR 21 to Faro and EUR 63 to Lisbon, and the choice looks obvious. But they do not show you Faro's 13 hostels at $23.60/night versus Lisbon's 81 at $19.23.
The cheapest flight is not the cheapest trip.
