Mike SwigunskiThe Hostel Pink Tax: Women Pay 12% More for a Dorm Bed -- And the Room Disappears When It's Busy
I was in Lima when a friend -- solo female traveler, six months into a South America trip -- showed me her booking receipt and asked, "Is this normal?" She was paying $15.70 for a female dorm. I was paying $10.39 for a mixed dorm. Same hostel. Same n
You’re searching for a hostel in Lima. The mixed dorm is $10.39. You click the women-only option — it’s $15.70. Same hostel. Same breakfast. Same bunk. The only difference is who’s in the room with you. That $5.31 gap is the hostel pink tax.
We sampled dorm prices at 2,300+ hostels across 400+ cities, recording both prices side by side whenever a hostel offered both room types on the same date. Across 30,017 comparisons, the female dorm costs more 67.6% of the time. The average premium is $2.90 per night — 12.2% above the mixed rate.
The regional picture:
Europe is the worst
Europe charges women the most in absolute terms — $4.27 more per night, and the female dorm is more expensive 75% of the time. Southeast Asia is the most equitable region, though a 7.1% premium still adds up fast over a long trip.
Female vs mixed dorm price by region (average price · 30,017 comparable samples): Europe — Female $42.91, Mixed $38.63. Latin America — Female $20.59, Mixed $18.80. SE Asia — Female $20.10, Mixed $18.77.
The worst cities
and the worst offenders
Peru appears four times in our worst-city list. Montanita, Ecuador tops it at 85% — the female dorm costs nearly double the mixed rate. These aren’t different room sizes or different amenity levels. They’re the same dorm beds priced by gender.

The worst individual hostel in our dataset: Viajero Lima Barranco Hostel charges $27.57 for the female dorm and $12.32 for mixed — a 124% surcharge. The same bunk beds. The same building. Vienna Westend City Hostel comes in second at 78% ($84.54 vs $47.56).
The disappearing
female dorm
At 143 hostels in our data, the female-only dorm appears on some dates and vanishes on others. Peru Hostel Tajmani in Arequipa offered the female option on just 1 of 28 sampled dates — 4% availability. The Soul House Bali showed 2 beds or fewer across all 173 observations we took across multiple months.
Hostel operators have confirmed the practice on industry forums: when demand is high and male walk-ins need beds, some hostels convert the female dorm to mixed for that night. The result is that female-only dorms exist primarily on low-demand dates — when the hostel has space anyway — and disappear exactly when women need them most.
