Portugal is Western Europe's last great budget destination. Lisbon still offers some of the best-value city travel on the continent — excellent hostels, outstanding food at all price levels, and a café culture where a coffee and pastry de nata costs €1.80. Porto is even cheaper and arguably more beautiful. The Alentejo wine country, the Douro Valley, and the Algarve coast round out a country that's hard to leave once you arrive. Avoid peak summer in Lisbon and Algarve when prices spike significantly.
Budget breakdown
Lisbon prices have risen sharply since 2022. Porto and Braga are 20–30% cheaper. The Alentejo region is very affordable.
