The Dominican Republic is the most visited country in the Caribbean and more diverse than its all-inclusive reputation suggests. Cabarete is world-class kitesurfing and windsurfing. Las Terrenas on the Samaná peninsula is low-key, French-inflected and beautiful. Jarabacoa in the mountains is a base for whitewater rafting and hiking to Pico Duarte. Avoid the Punta Cana resort belt unless you specifically want that experience — the rest of the country is far more interesting.
