Cheap Flights from Berlin: Complete Budget Guide (2026)

BER finally opened and the budget carriers moved in fast. Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air, and Eurowings fight over every route from Brandenburg.

BER opened in October 2020, only nine years behind schedule. Nine. Years. The original budget was €2.83 billion. The final tab came in around €7 billion. It became the punchline of German efficiency jokes, which is like being the punchline of Japanese punctuality jokes — deeply, existentially embarrassing.

But here is the thing: now that it actually works, Berlin is one of the best budget flight hubs in Central Europe. Ryanair has made it a major base. easyJet and Wizz Air fight over Eastern European routes. Eurowings gives you Lufthansa's network at prices Lufthansa would never publicly admit to. If you are in Central or Northern Europe and not checking BER prices, you are leaving money on the tarmac.

One Airport, Finally

Berlin Brandenburg (BER) — Terminal 1 is the main terminal, handling most airlines including easyJet, Lufthansa, and Turkish Airlines. Terminal 2 is the low-cost annex — Ryanair lives here. Terminal 5 (the old Schönefeld) handles overflow and seasonal charters.

Getting there — FEX (Airport Express) from Hauptbahnhof takes 30 minutes and costs €5.00 with an ABC zone ticket (BER is in zone C). S-Bahn S9/S45 runs the same route for the same price, just slower (45 minutes). Both are covered by a Berlin Welcome Card if you bought one.

Berlin to Europe — Where €20 Gets You Across a Border

Berlin sits in the geographic center of Europe. Poland is 80km east. Czech Republic is a three-hour train ride south. That centrality translates into insanely cheap flights in every direction.

What You Should Expect to Pay (Round-Trip)

SeasonBudget RangeSweet Spot
Jan-Mar€20-90€30-60

Jul-Aug€70-250€100-170
Sep-Nov€25-110€40-80
Dec€50-200Holiday premium

Those January prices are not theoretical. Ryanair and easyJet dump fares from Berlin every winter like clockwork.

The Airlines Worth Knowing

Ryanair — Major BER base in Terminal 2. The usual deal — cheapest fares in existence, carry-on only, no soul, no apologies. Southern Europe and the Mediterranean are their strongest routes from Berlin. Barcelona, Palma, Rome, Athens — all regularly under €40 round-trip.

easyJet — Terminal 1. Strong coverage to the UK, France, Italy, and Spain. London, Paris, Milan, Barcelona. Slightly more civilized than Ryanair. Book 4-6 weeks out for best prices.

Wizz Air — The Eastern Europe specialist. Budapest, Bucharest, Sofia, Skopje, Tirana — Wizz dominates these routes from Berlin with prices that feel illegal. If you are heading to the Balkans, Wizz is your airline.

Eurowings — Lufthansa's budget arm, and Berlin is close to home turf. Domestic German routes, plus Mediterranean sun destinations (Mallorca, Sardinia, Crete). Prices are slightly higher than ultra-low-cost carriers but include more luggage.

Turkish Airlines — Not budget, but their IST hub connections are often the cheapest way from Berlin to the Middle East, Central Asia, and beyond. Consistently competitive pricing.

Berlin to the Balkans & Turkey — Wizz Air's Playground

This is where Berlin punches above its weight. The combination of Wizz Air and Ryanair means Eastern Europe and the Balkans are absurdly accessible and cheap.

A €30 round-trip to Budapest puts you in a city where a hostel dorm costs €10/night and a three-course meal costs €8. A €50 round-trip to Istanbul puts you in one of the greatest cities on earth at $30/day. The math from Berlin to the Balkans is the best value proposition in European budget travel.

Berlin to Long-Haul — The Istanbul Connection

Berlin does not have London or Paris-level long-haul options, but connecting strategies work well.

What You Should Expect to Pay (Round-Trip)

DestinationBudget RangeBest Strategy
Bangkok€400-600Turkish via IST, or Gulf carriers via DOH/DXB
Bali€450-700Via KUL or SIN, connecting through IST
New York€300-500Norse Atlantic (seasonal), or connecting via LHR/CDG
Mexico City€400-650Via MAD (Iberia) or direct seasonal
India€350-550Turkish via IST, or Gulf carriers

The Istanbul Strategy

Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is Berlin's long-haul secret weapon. IST is one of the world's best-connected hubs, and Turkish runs competitive fares from BER. A BER→IST→BKK routing often undercuts anything via the Gulf carriers, and the Istanbul stopover program (free hotel for long layovers) makes it a bonus destination.

Budget on the Ground

Berlin is the cheapest major capital in Western/Central Europe. It is not even close.

Accommodation — Hostel dorms run €12-25/night. Yes, twelve euros in a European capital. Wombat's, Generator, The Circus — all solid. Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain have the best backpacker scene. Book 1 week ahead in summer, show up whenever in winter.

Food — Döner kebab for €5-7 — this is the Berlin food group. Currywurst for €3-4. Vietnamese food in Mitte for €8-10 (Berlin's Vietnamese community is massive and the food is exceptional). Beer at a Späti (corner shop) costs €1-2. Beer at a bar costs €3-5. Beer at a club costs €5-7. Berlin runs on döner and beer, and both are priced accordingly.

Transport — Day ticket (AB zones) costs €8.80. The BVG network (U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram, bus) covers everything. Berlin is also one of the most bikeable cities in Europe — flat terrain, dedicated bike lanes everywhere.

Free stuff — Berlin Wall Memorial, East Side Gallery, Holocaust Memorial, Reichstag dome (book online), Mauerpark flea market on Sundays, Tempelhofer Feld (an entire airport turned into a park because Berlin). Street art in Kreuzberg. Techno culture in abandoned warehouses. Berlin is where budget travelers go to feel rich.

Seasonal Strategy

WhenWhat to Do
Jan-FebCheapest flights of the year. Berlin is cold but the indoor culture (museums, bars, clubs) is peak.
Mar-AprShoulder season. Flight prices rise slowly. Book summer trips now for best fares.
May-JunBerlin's best months. Warm, long days, outdoor everything. Prices climb — book 6+ weeks ahead.
Jul-AugPeak. Festival season (Lollapalooza, Fête de la Musique). Fly midweek for savings.
Sep-OctSweet spot. Perfect weather, dropping prices, Berlin Festival of Lights (October).
Nov-DecChristmas markets are legendary but price flights up in December. November is the hidden gem — cheap everything.

Berlin as a Central Europe Hub

Berlin's geography makes it a natural hub for circuits.

The Eastern Europe loop — BER to Budapest (€25), Budapest to Bucharest (€20 via Wizz), Bucharest to Sofia (€25), Sofia back to BER (€30). Four countries for under €100 in flights.

The Scandinavia connector — FlixBus to Hamburg (€15, 3 hours), then budget flights or ferries to Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo. Or fly direct BER to Copenhagen on easyJet (€30-60).

The train alternative — Berlin Hauptbahnhof has direct trains to Prague (4.5 hours, €19-39), Warsaw (5.5 hours, €19-29), Amsterdam (6 hours, €39-59 via ICE). Sometimes the train beats the plane when you factor in airport time.

FAQ

Is Berlin cheaper to fly from than Munich or Frankfurt? For budget carriers, yes. Munich and Frankfurt are Lufthansa fortresses with higher base fares. Berlin has more Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air competition, which drives prices lower — especially to Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean.

What happened to Tegel and Tempelhof? Tegel closed when BER opened in 2020. Tempelhof closed in 2008 and is now that incredible public park. All flights now use BER.

When is the cheapest time to fly from Berlin? January-February and November are consistently cheapest. Early September is the sweet spot — summer weather, post-holiday pricing. Avoid Christmas market season (late November-December) if you want cheap fares.

Can I position via Berlin for cheaper long-haul flights? Yes. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is often cheaper from BER than from Western European hubs. Also check connecting through London (Ryanair BER→STN, then separate transatlantic booking) — it adds a stop but can save €100+.
