Jeswin ThomasCheap Flights from Houston — Two Airports, One Latin America Obsession
Houston has something most cities do not: two airports that are actually worth using for completely different reasons. Bush Intercontinental is United's second-largest hub with direct flights to places like Singapore and Sydney — routes you cannot get from almost any other US city. Hobby is Southwest's Texas stronghold, where you can fly to Cancun for the price of a brisket dinner at Killen's. Between the two of them, you have the most comprehensive Latin America flight network in Texas and one of the best in the entire country.
I flew Spirit from IAH to Guatemala City for $280 round-trip, connected overland through Belize and Mexico, then flew Southwest from Cancun back to Hobby for $150. Three countries, one month, under $500 in airfare. Houston makes that kind of trip math work.
Two Airports — Know the Difference
Bush Intercontinental: IAH — United, International — Latin America, Europe, Asia
Hobby: HOU — Southwest, JetBlue — Domestic, Caribbean, Mexico
They are 45 minutes apart with no direct transit connection. Uber between them runs $35-45. If you are connecting between airports, plan 2+ hours minimum.
Always compare both. I have seen $200+ price differences for the same destination on the same day.
Houston to Latin America — The Main Event
Houston is Latin America's front door from the US:
What You Should Expect to Pay (Round-Trip)
Cancun: $150-250 — United / Southwest — 2h
Mexico City: $180-280 — United / Volaris — 2.5h
Guadalajara: $200-300 — United / Volaris — 2.5h
Guatemala City: $250-380 — United / Avianca — 2.5h
San Jose (CR): $280-420 — United / Spirit — 3.5h
Bogota: $320-480 — United / Avianca — 4.5h
Lima: $400-580 — United / LATAM — 6.5h
Sao Paulo: $550-750 — United / LATAM — 10h
Spirit flies IAH to Cancun, Guatemala, and Colombia for 40% less than United. Volaris and VivaAerobus run IAH to Mexico routes for $150-250 round-trip. Book on the carrier websites, not aggregators.
Hobby Airport Routes (Southwest Hub)
Cancun: $180-300 — 2h
San Juan: $250-380 — 4h
Belize: $280-420 — 2h
Cabo: $200-320 — 3h
Nassau: $280-400 — 2.5h
Sample Itineraries
Central America Explorer (3 weeks) — IAH to Guatemala City ($280 on Spirit). Overland through Guatemala, Belize, back into Mexico. Cancun to HOU ($150 on Southwest). Total flights around $430.
South America Circuit (4 weeks) — IAH to Bogota ($350). Bogota to Lima ($150 on Avianca). Lima to Buenos Aires ($200 on LATAM). Buenos Aires to IAH ($450). Total flights around $1,150.
Mexico Deep Dive (2 weeks) — IAH to Mexico City ($180 on Volaris). Overland through CDMX, Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido. Cancun to HOU ($180 on Southwest). Total flights around $360.
Houston to Europe — United's Star Alliance Network
What You Should Expect to Pay (Round-Trip)
London: $480-650 — United / British — 9.5h
Amsterdam: $500-680 — United / KLM — 10h
Frankfurt: $500-680 — United / Lufthansa — 10.5h
Paris: $520-700 — United / Air France — 10h
United's Star Alliance partners often offer better award availability than cash prices suggest. If you are collecting MileagePlus points, the excursionist perk gives you a free stopover on award tickets — genuinely useful for multi-city Europe trips.
Houston to Asia — Those Rare Direct Routes
Here is what makes Houston interesting for Asia: United flies direct to Singapore and Sydney. Those are routes you cannot get from most US cities.
Tokyo: $700-900 — IAH-NRT direct — 14h
Singapore: $750-950 — IAH-SIN direct — 19h
Sydney: $900-1200 — IAH-SYD direct — 17h
Bangkok: $700-900 — IAH-NRT-BKK — 20h
Hong Kong: $800-1000 — IAH-NRT-HKG — 19h
Sample Itinerary
Australia + New Zealand (3 weeks) — IAH to Sydney ($950 on United direct). Sydney to Auckland ($150 on Jetstar). Auckland to IAH via LAX ($800). Total flights around $1,900.
Houston-Specific Moves
Play both airports — Check IAH and HOU for every trip. Southwest at HOU often beats United at IAH. But Spirit at IAH can beat both. Never assume one airport is always cheaper.
Volaris and VivaAerobus — Mexican budget carriers at IAH. Mexico routes for $150-250 round-trip. Book on carrier sites, not aggregators. VivaAerobus will be late — budget your expectations accordingly.
United MileagePlus — Houston-based United cards get bonus earning. Partner awards to Latin America are cheap in points. The excursionist perk is a free stopover on multi-city award tickets.
Book timing — Mexico cheapest May through June and September through November, book 3-6 weeks ahead. Central America cheapest April through May and September through November, book 2-3 months ahead. Europe cheapest January through March and October through November, book 2-4 months ahead.
