Sean PierceCheap Flights from Los Angeles — The Pacific Rim is Your Playground
Last spring I took a Zipair flight from LAX to Tokyo Narita for $389 one-way. No meal, no entertainment system, no legroom to speak of. I brought a bag of trail mix and downloaded six episodes of a podcast. Landed in Japan twelve hours later having spent less than most people pay for a Coachella ticket. That is the kind of math that makes LA one of the best cities in the country for budget international travel.
You are sitting on the Pacific Rim. Asia is 5+ hours closer than it is from New York. Mexico is practically next door. And if you are willing to get creative — like, Tijuana-airport creative — the whole Western Hemisphere opens up for less than you think.
Your Airport Lineup
LAX — The big one. Largest international hub on the West Coast. Zipair, Starlux, every Asian carrier you can name. FlyAway bus runs $9.75, Metro K Line connects you too. Terminals are far apart, so budget extra time for connections.
BUR (Burbank) — Domestic budget carriers only — Southwest, JetBlue. Use it for positioning flights to other hubs.
SNA (Orange County/John Wayne) — Some domestic positioning, limited international. Worth checking if you live in the OC.
ONT (Ontario) — Inland Empire residents take note. Growing Mexico and Latin America routes.
LA to Southeast Asia — Your 5-Hour Head Start
The West Coast advantage is not theoretical. You are meaningfully closer to every Asian destination than anyone on the East Coast.
What You Should Expect to Pay (Round-Trip)

Apr-Jun: $500-750 — $550-650

Sep-Nov: $450-700 — $500-600

The Airlines That Matter
Zipair (JAL subsidiary) — LAX to Tokyo Narita. True budget long-haul, $400-600 one-way is possible. Bring your own food. Pay for bags. Do not expect frills. Do expect savings.
Starlux (Taiwan) — LAX to Taipei. A step above ultra-low-cost — better seats, better vibes. Good connections to all of Southeast Asia via Taipei.
Korean Air / Asiana — Via Seoul. Competitive pricing with actually good service. Easy connections to every major SEA city.
China Airlines / EVA — Via Taipei. Often the cheapest routing to Vietnam and Thailand. EVA in particular is underrated.
Philippine Airlines — Direct to Manila. If you are Philippines-focused, this is the obvious play. Decent onward connections through Manila.

Manila: $400-550 — Philippines, budget connections
Taipei: $450-600 — All of SEA via China Airlines

LA to Europe — The West Coast Penalty (and How to Beat It)
Flying to Europe from LA costs more than from the East Coast. That is just geography. But there are workarounds.
What You Should Expect to Pay (Round-Trip)
Jan-Mar: $400-600 — $450-550
Apr-Jun: $500-750 — $550-650
Jul-Aug: $650-950 — $700-850
Sep-Nov: $400-650 — $450-550
How to Route It
Direct budget options — Norse Atlantic, Level/Iberia to Barcelona and Madrid, Icelandair via Reykjavik with a free stopover.
Via East Coast (often cheaper total) — Position to JFK or EWR with a budget domestic carrier, then use European budget airlines. Example: LAX to JFK ($80 on Spirit) plus JFK to Lisbon ($310 on TAP) equals $390 total. That beats most direct fares.
Via Iceland — Icelandair and PLAY. Free stopover option. Often $100-200 cheaper than going direct.
Sample Itineraries
Budget Western Europe (3 weeks) — LAX to Reykjavik ($380). London ($50 onward). Paris, Barcelona. Return via Reykjavik. Total flights around $550.
Eastern Europe Discovery (3 weeks) — LAX to JFK ($90). JFK to Warsaw ($350 on LOT). Krakow, Prague, Budapest. Return via JFK. Total flights around $600.
LA-Specific Moves
The Tijuana play — Drive to San Diego, walk across the CBX bridge to Tijuana airport. Volaris and other Mexican carriers have even cheaper fares from TIJ than from LAX. This alone can save you $100-200 on Mexico flights.
Red-eye positioning — Overnight domestic flights to East Coast hubs connect perfectly with morning transatlantic departures. Sleep on the plane, save a hotel night.
Pacific routing for Europe — Sometimes LAX to Tokyo to London is cheaper than direct. Weird, but real.
Error fare magnet — LA gets a disproportionate number of mistake fares. Follow the deal accounts.
