Cheap Flights from San Francisco — The Bay Area's Asia Advantage

Bryan MendezDec 20256 min read

I used to live in the Mission, and I remember the first time I realized I could fly to Manila for $430 round-trip. From SFO. Direct-ish, via Taipei on China Airlines. That is less than a month of parking in SOMA. The Bay Area is absurdly well-positioned for Asian travel — you have EVA Air, China Airlines, Korean Air, Zipair, Philippine Airlines, and Singapore Airlines all competing for your money. Tech money keeps the premium cabins full, which means economy fares stay competitive because airlines need to fill the back of the plane too.

SFO is not the cheapest airport in America for every direction, but for Asia, it is one of the best launch points you will find.

Three Airports in the Bay

SFO (San Francisco International) — The main hub. Excellent Asia connections — EVA, China Airlines, Singapore, Korean, all the Japan carriers. BART to downtown costs $9.65 and takes 30 minutes.

OAK (Oakland) — Budget domestic carriers, some international. Can be significantly cheaper for positioning flights. BART accessible from Coliseum station.

SJC (San Jose) — South Bay option. ANA and Hainan Airlines fly from here. Growing international presence.

OAK is the one most people overlook. Budget domestic fares from Oakland can save you real money on positioning to other international hubs.

SFO to Southeast Asia — This Is Where the Bay Flexes

What You Should Expect to Pay (Round-Trip)

  • Jan-Mar: $450-650 — $500-580

  • Apr-Jun: $500-700 — $550-630

  • Jul-Aug: $600-850 — $650-750

  • Sep-Nov: $450-650 — $500-600

  • Dec: $550-800 — Holiday premium

The Airlines That Matter

EVA Air — SFO to Taipei direct. Excellent service, competitive pricing. Easy connections to all of Southeast Asia via their Taipei hub. Consistently one of the best value propositions from the Bay Area.

China Airlines — SFO to Taipei. Often $50-100 cheaper than EVA for the same routing. Good connections to Vietnam and Thailand.

Korean Air / Asiana — Via Seoul. Strong Southeast Asia network. Sometimes the best deals to Bangkok and Singapore run through ICN.

Zipair — SFO to Tokyo. True low-cost carrier — $400-600 one-way is possible. Your budget Japan gateway.

Philippine Airlines — SFO to Manila direct. Best for Philippines trips. Cheap onward connections from Manila to the rest of Southeast Asia.

Singapore Airlines — Direct SFO to Singapore. Premium carrier, but watch for sale fares. Worth it if Singapore is on your itinerary anyway.

The Taipei Triangle

SFO to Taipei to your final Southeast Asia destination is almost always the cheapest routing. Master this. EVA or China Airlines to Taipei, then a budget carrier onward to Bangkok, Hanoi, or wherever you are headed. This is the play.

Gateway Strategy

  • Taipei: $450-600 — Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines

  • Tokyo: $450-650 — Japan + SEA — use Zipair

  • Manila: $400-550 — Philippines, cheap SEA hops

  • Singapore: $550-750 — Malaysia, Indonesia

  • Seoul: $500-650 — Premium connections

Sample Itineraries

Classic SEA Backpacker (5 weeks) — SFO to Manila ($450). Palawan, fly to Bangkok ($150). Cambodia, Vietnam. Return via Taipei to SFO. Total flights around $700.

Deep Thailand + Neighbors (4 weeks) — SFO to Bangkok ($550 via Taipei). Chiang Mai, overland to Laos, Vietnam. Return from Bangkok. Total flights around $750.

Indonesia Focus (3 weeks) — SFO to Singapore ($600). Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bali. Return from Singapore. Total flights around $850.

SFO to Europe — More Expensive, but Workable

What You Should Expect to Pay (Round-Trip)

  • Jan-Mar: $400-600 — $450-520

  • Apr-Jun: $500-750 — $550-650

  • Jul-Aug: $650-950 — $700-850

  • Sep-Nov: $400-650 — $450-550

How to Route It

Direct budget options — Condor to Frankfurt, Icelandair via Reykjavik with free stopover, Norse Atlantic or Level when available.

Via East Coast (often cheaper total) — SFO to JFK or BOS on a $100-150 domestic, then budget transatlantic. Total often beats direct pricing. Red-eye from SFO to JFK connects perfectly with morning transatlantic departures.

Via Iceland — Icelandair from SFO. Free stopover. Good for Scandinavia and the UK.

Sample Itineraries

Northern Europe (3 weeks) — SFO to Reykjavik ($420). Copenhagen, Berlin, Amsterdam. Return via Reykjavik. Total flights around $580.

Mediterranean Budget (3 weeks) — SFO to JFK ($120). JFK to Lisbon ($300 on TAP). Spain, Italy. Return via Lisbon to JFK to SFO. Total flights around $600.

SFO to Latin America — Solid Mexico, South America Needs Planning

What You Should Expect to Pay (Round-Trip)

  • Mexico: $200-400 — Any

  • Central America: $300-500 — Jan-Apr, Sep-Nov

  • Colombia: $400-600 — Any

  • Peru/Southern SA: $550-850 — Mar-Nov

Airlines Worth Knowing

Volaris — SFO to Mexico City and Guadalajara. Ultra-low-cost, bags extra. The fares make up for the inconveniences.

Alaska Airlines — Good Mexico coverage and a mileage plan that actually holds value.

Copa — SFO to Panama City. Best South America connector from the West Coast.

LATAM — Via Lima to South America. Sometimes competitive direct pricing.

Sample Itineraries

Mexico + Central America (4 weeks) — SFO to Mexico City ($280 on Volaris). Oaxaca, overland to Guatemala, Costa Rica. Total flights around $500.

Andean Adventure (5 weeks) — SFO to Lima ($550 on LATAM). Cusco, La Paz, Santiago. Return via Lima. Total flights around $850.

Bay Area Moves

Tech conference effect — Dreamforce, GDC, and similar events spike domestic prices around SFO. Avoid those weeks or fly from OAK.

Oakland for positioning — OAK domestic fares can be ridiculously cheap for positioning to better international hubs.

Red-eye mastery — SFO red-eye to JFK connects perfectly with morning transatlantic departures. Sleep on the plane, save a hotel night, arrive in Europe by afternoon.
