Cheap Flights from São Paulo: Complete Budget Guide (2026)

GRU is South America's aviation powerhouse. Find cheap flights to Europe via Lisbon, Africa, and across the continent.

Last updated: February 2026 | Prices checked weekly

I was eating a mortadella sandwich the size of my head at the Mercado Municipal, washing it down with fresh passionfruit juice, and looking at the departure board at GRU on my phone. Lisbon for $480. Frankfurt for $520. Johannesburg for $750. Dubai for $700. Sao Paulo isn't just South America's biggest city -- it's the continent's aviation powerhouse. More international routes than any other Latin American airport. More competition. More deals.

People skip Sao Paulo because it's "just a business city." Those people are wrong about the city and they're definitely wrong about the airport. If you're backpacking South America, you'll pass through GRU. And if you're smart, you'll use it as your launchpad.

Sao Paulo Airports: Three Airports, Three Purposes

GRU (Guarulhos International)

  • All international flights -- LATAM's major hub
  • Airlines you care about: LATAM, Gol, Azul, TAP Portugal, Air France, Lufthansa, Swiss, KLM, Emirates, Iberia
  • Getting there: Airport bus service to city center (~R$60, 60-90 min depending on traffic)

CGH (Congonhas)

  • Domestic flights -- the Rio shuttle, other domestic routes
  • Location: Much closer to city center, 30 minutes versus 60-90 for GRU
  • Use it for: The Sao Paulo-Rio shuttle and other domestic hops

VCP (Viracopos/Campinas)

  • Azul's hub -- some budget international flights
  • Distance: 100 km from Sao Paulo
  • Consider it when: Azul has significantly cheaper international fares (they sometimes do)

My take: Sao Paulo traffic is legendary. Not "bad traffic" -- legendary. Allow 3+ hours to get to GRU during rush hour. I've seen people miss flights who left "plenty of time." Plan accordingly.

The Airlines That Matter

TAP Portugal -- GRU to Lisbon direct, multiple daily. Often the cheapest route to Europe from Brazil. The Lisbon hub connects to everywhere via TAP's own network plus Ryanair and EasyJet onward. TAP's Portugal stopover program is genuinely useful -- free nights in Lisbon on your way to wherever. This airline is your best friend from Sao Paulo.

LATAM -- GRU to Madrid, Frankfurt, Paris, London, Milan. Home carrier with the widest European network. Watch their sales -- they're aggressive.

Air France -- GRU to Paris direct. Good connections throughout Europe from CDG.

Lufthansa / Swiss -- GRU to Frankfurt or Zurich. Central Europe gateway with German-Swiss precision.

Iberia -- GRU to Madrid. Good Spain connections.

KLM -- GRU to Amsterdam. Northern Europe gateway.

Budget alternative: Azul + TAP from VCP -- Azul flies from Viracopos to Lisbon. Often cheaper than GRU departures. Worth the 100 km trip if the savings are significant.

How to Route It

Via Middle East (best value) -- Emirates from GRU to Dubai direct, or Qatar from GRU to Doha. Often $900-1100 to Bangkok or Singapore. This is usually the most comfortable and the cheapest. The Gulf carriers love the Brazil market.

6 Things I Learned Flying Out of Sao Paulo

1. TAP Portugal is your best friend. Lisbon is almost always the cheapest Europe gateway from Brazil. Use TAP's stopover program -- free nights in Lisbon to break up the flight. I do this every time.

2. Congonhas for domestic. CGH is 30 minutes from center versus 60-90 for GRU. Use Congonhas for the Rio shuttle and domestic hops. It saves you hours of traffic misery.

3. Viracopos for savings. Azul's VCP hub sometimes has significantly cheaper international fares. The airport is 100 km from the city, but if you're saving $200+ on a transatlantic ticket, take the bus.

4. Visa considerations. Brazilians need visas for many countries. Non-Brazilians: Brazil is visa-free for most Western passports, making it an easy base.

5. Exchange rate awareness. When the Real is weak, international flights priced in USD feel expensive. When it's strong, Brazil becomes a bargain base. Check the current rate before planning.

6. Don't just transit. I know people who've flown through GRU a dozen times and never left the airport. Sao Paulo has world-class food -- Japanese, Italian, Lebanese, plus incredible street food. The museums are excellent. The nightlife runs until sunrise. Build in a few days.

FAQ

GRU, CGH, or VCP — which São Paulo airport should I use? GRU (Guarulhos) for all international flights and most long-haul domestic. CGH (Congonhas) is right in the city and handles domestic/regional routes — way more convenient if you're connecting within Brazil. VCP (Viracopos/Campinas) is Azul's hub and occasionally has budget international fares, but it's 100 km from central São Paulo. For backpackers: GRU in, CGH for domestic hops, ignore VCP unless Azul has a screaming deal.

What is the TAP Portugal stopover program? TAP lets you add a free Lisbon stopover (up to 5 nights) on any transatlantic ticket without paying extra airfare. Book a São Paulo to anywhere-in-Europe ticket via Lisbon on TAP, select the stopover option, and you get a free mini-trip in Portugal. It's genuinely one of the best deals in transatlantic travel and turns a connection into a destination. Book directly through TAP's website for the stopover option to appear.

Can I fly to Africa from São Paulo? Yes — and this is one of GRU's secret weapons. LATAM flies direct to Johannesburg, and Ethiopian Airlines connects through Addis Ababa to the rest of the continent. The South Atlantic crossing is shorter than most people expect (about 8 hours to Johannesburg). Fares run USD $600-900 round-trip depending on season. Colonial-era route ties mean São Paulo is the cheapest gateway to Africa from anywhere in the Americas.

When is the cheapest time to fly from São Paulo? Brazilian seasons flip — their summer is December through February, and that's when domestic prices spike and flights fill up. The sweet spot for international flights is May through June (Brazilian autumn) and August through October. Avoid Carnival (late February/early March), New Year, and the December holiday rush. For Europe specifically, booking in May for September travel is the move.

Prices verified February 2026 and updated weekly. All fares are round-trip estimates.

Now playing: "Trem das Onze" -- Adoniran Barbosa. The unofficial anthem of Sao Paulo. You'll understand when you're stuck in traffic on the way to GRU.
