Mike SwigunskiCheap Flights from Lima in 2026: A Backpacker's Playbook
I had just eaten the best ceviche of my life in Miraflores -- the kind where the fish is so fresh it practically swam to the plate -- when I pulled up flights from Lima on my phone. Cusco for $55. Bogota for $160. Madrid for $620. The thing about Lima is that it's quietly one of the most connected cities in South America. LATAM's major hub here means excellent connections in every direction, and for anyone doing the Andean backpacking circuit, this is where it all starts and ends.
Nobody comes to Lima planning to stay long. Everybody stays longer than they planned.
Lima Airport: One Airport, One Mission
LIM (Jorge Chavez International)
The only game in town -- all domestic and international
Airlines you care about: LATAM, Avianca, Copa, JetBlue, Iberia, Air France, KLM, Air Europa
Getting there: Airport Express Lima bus to Miraflores (~$8 USD, 45-60 min)
My take: Lima traffic is legendary. Not "New York bad" -- legendary. Allow 2+ hours to reach the airport from Miraflores or Barranco during rush hour. I've almost missed a flight in a taxi that moved 200 meters in 30 minutes.

6 Things I Learned Flying Out of Lima
1. Traffic will test your patience and your faith. Lima's traffic is genuinely some of the worst in South America. The airport is not close to the tourist neighborhoods. Leave early. Then leave earlier than that.
2. Miraflores or Barranco for your base. Both have easy airport bus access. Central Lima is farther, grittier, and the bus connections are worse. Stay near the coast.
3. Book Lima-Cusco early. Nearly every Peru trip includes Cusco. That route fills up and prices climb. Book it early for best fares -- $50-60 is common with advance purchase, $120+ last minute.
4. Altitude strategy matters. Lima is at sea level. Cusco is at 3,400 meters. That's a massive jump. Spend a day or two adjusting in Lima, or fly via Arequipa (2,335m) as a midpoint acclimatization stop.
5. Eat the ceviche. I know this isn't a flight tip. I don't care. Lima has world-class food and the ceviche scene is arguably the best on earth. Don't rush through this city to reach Machu Picchu. You'll regret what you missed.
6. Amazon access from Lima. Iquitos -- the jungle gateway -- is only reachable by air or boat from within Peru. LIM to Iquitos opens the Amazon and it's a $60-150 flight. Add it.
