Isaac StrunaCheap Flights from Vancouver in 2026: A Backpacker's Playbook
I landed at YVR after a red-eye from Hong Kong, walked straight to the food court, and ate the best airport dim sum I've ever had. That's Vancouver in a nutshell -- a city where the Asian food is world-class and the flights to Asia are the cheapest on the continent. With a massive Asian-Canadian population driving demand, competition on Pacific routes is fierce. And fierce competition means deals for you.
If you're heading to Southeast Asia from anywhere in North America, route yourself through here. Period.
Vancouver Airports: Your Pacific Gateway
YVR (Vancouver International)
The one that matters -- Asia premier gateway, some Europe
Airlines you care about: Cathay Pacific, Air China, China Eastern, EVA Air, Korean Air, Philippine Airlines, WestJet
Getting there: Canada Line to downtown ($10.25 CAD, 25 min)
SEA (Seattle-Tacoma) -- Just Across the Border
Distance: 2.5 hours south by car
Why consider it: US carrier connections, different route options, sometimes cheaper when the exchange rate works in your favor
My take: Currency fluctuations matter here. With CAD/USD bouncing around, sometimes Seattle wins, sometimes Vancouver does. Always check both in your local currency before booking.
Cheap Flights from Vancouver to Southeast Asia
The best city in North America for Asia flights. I'll say it louder: the best. Full stop.
What You'll Actually Pay (CAD, Round-Trip)
Jan-Mar: $600-900 — $700-800
Apr-Jun: $700-950 — $750-850
Jul-Aug: $850-1200 — $900-1050
Sep-Nov: $600-900 — $700-820
That's roughly 25-30% cheaper than Toronto for the same Asia routes.
The Airlines That Matter
Cathay Pacific -- YVR to Hong Kong direct. A world-class airline that somehow keeps pricing competitive. The Hong Kong hub connects you to every corner of Southeast Asia efficiently. This route is one of the most competitive transpacific matchups in existence.
EVA Air -- YVR to Taipei direct. Excellent service, surprisingly good prices, and a strong network into Southeast Asia from Taiwan. Consistently underrated.
Air China -- YVR to Beijing or Shanghai. Cheaper than the premium carriers but be aware that Chinese connections may require a transit visa depending on your layover time. Do the paperwork math.
China Eastern -- Via Shanghai. Budget-friendly and frequently runs deals on Southeast Asia routes through China.
Korean Air -- YVR to Seoul. Premium connections with periodic sales that make the premium worth paying.
Philippine Airlines -- YVR to Manila direct. The obvious choice if the Philippines is your destination. Growing route with improving frequency.
Gateway Cities: Where to Enter Asia
Hong Kong: $650-900 — Southern Southeast Asia, Vietnam
Taipei: $600-850 — Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines
Manila: $600-800 — Philippines, budget island hopping
Seoul: $700-950 — Premium connections everywhere
Beijing/Shanghai: $550-800 — Cheapest, but transit visa hassle

The Airlines That Matter
Icelandair -- YVR to Reykjavik, seasonal. Free Iceland stopover plus a gateway to Northern Europe. When it's running, this is often the cheapest way east.
Condor -- YVR to Frankfurt, seasonal. German leisure carrier that gives you a Central Europe gateway at leisure-carrier prices.
WestJet -- Direct to London, Dublin, Paris, Barcelona. Canadian carrier, reliable, and runs legitimate sales.
Air Canada -- Widest European network from YVR with direct service to Frankfurt, London, Dublin, Paris. Premium pricing but frequent sales make it worth monitoring.
Via Seattle -- Worth checking. More European budget options from SEA can save you real money.

5 Things I Learned Flying Out of Vancouver
1. Cathay Pacific is the sweet spot. The Vancouver-Hong Kong route is one of the most competitive transpacific matchups in the world. Cathay regularly prices below other full-service carriers. Search it first for anything Asia.
2. Currency arbitrage is real. Check YVR prices in CAD versus Seattle prices in USD. Do the actual conversion. Sometimes driving 2.5 hours south saves you hundreds.
3. Eat dim sum at the airport. I'm serious. YVR has genuinely excellent Asian food. It's not sad airport sushi -- it's real Cantonese cooking. Eat well before your 12-hour flight.
4. Get the NEXUS card. If you cross to Seattle regularly, NEXUS ($50 for 5 years) saves hours at the border and includes TSA PreCheck plus Global Entry. The ROI is ridiculous.
5. Shoulder season is the move. Vancouver's low season (Jan-Mar) aligns with Southeast Asia's high season. You get cheap departure fares and perfect arrival weather. Best of both worlds.
