DatingscoutCheap Flights from Bogota in 2026: A Backpacker's Playbook
I remember standing in El Dorado airport at 4am, groggy from a late night in La Candelaria, watching the departure board light up like a Christmas tree. Avianca flights to Lima, Quito, Madrid, Miami, Buenos Aires -- all leaving within the same hour. That's when I understood what Bogota really is: the crossroads of the Americas. Not metaphorically. Literally. If you're budget backpacking the Western Hemisphere, Bogota should be your hub. Avianca's massive network connects North and South America better than almost anywhere else, and the competition from Spirit and JetBlue keeps everybody honest on pricing.
Here's how to work the system.
Bogota Airports: El Dorado and That's It
BOG (El Dorado International)
Everything runs through here -- Avianca's fortress hub
Airlines you care about: Avianca, Wingo, LATAM, JetBlue, Spirit, Iberia, Air France, Air Europa
Getting there: TransMilenio bus to the city (~$3,500 COP, 45-60 min) or taxi (~$25,000 COP, about $6 USD)
My take: El Dorado is one of the busiest airports in Latin America. Allow extra time for immigration and connections. The lines at 6am are genuinely brutal.
Cheap Flights from Bogota to Europe
Strong direct connections, especially to Madrid. The colonial ties are still paying dividends -- in airfare.
What You'll Actually Pay (USD, Round-Trip)
Jan-Mar: $500-800 — $550-680
Apr-Jun: $480-750 — $520-650
Jul-Aug: $550-850 — $600-720
Sep-Nov: $480-750 — $520-650
The Airlines That Matter
Avianca -- BOG to Madrid, London, Barcelona direct. The home carrier runs frequent departures and their pricing is often the baseline that everyone else tries to beat. For Europe from Colombia, start here.
Iberia -- BOG to Madrid direct. Good connections throughout Spain and beyond. They share the route with Avianca and that competition keeps prices real.
Air France -- BOG to Paris direct. Your Northern Europe gateway. When they run sales on this route, jump.
Air Europa -- BOG to Madrid. The budget alternative to Iberia. Less frills, lower price, same destination.
LATAM -- Via Lima or direct to Madrid. Alternative routing when Avianca and Iberia aren't cooperating on price.
Gateway Strategy
Madrid: $500-720 — Spain, Portugal, Morocco
Paris: $550-780 — France, Northern Europe
London: $550-800 — UK, Ireland
Barcelona: $520-750 — Mediterranean coast
Sample Budget Routes
Spain + Portugal (3 weeks) BOG to Madrid ($520 Avianca) -- Andalucia -- Portugal -- Madrid -- BOG Total flights: ~$620
Western Europe Tour (4 weeks) BOG to Paris ($580 Air France) -- Belgium -- Amsterdam -- Germany -- Switzerland -- Paris -- BOG Total flights: ~$750
UK + Ireland (2 weeks) BOG to London ($580 Avianca) -- Scotland -- Dublin -- London -- BOG Total flights: ~$700
Cheap Flights from Bogota to Southeast Asia
Long journey from Colombia, but Bogota has workable angles.
What You'll Actually Pay (USD, Round-Trip)
All Year: $1000-1500 — $1100-1300
How to Route It
Via Europe -- BOG to Madrid or Paris (Avianca), then a separate ticket to Asia on Scoot or AirAsia X. The Europe stopover makes the journey bearable.
Via the US -- BOG to Miami ($180) or LA, then onward to Asia. More connections, sometimes cheaper.
Via Middle East -- Emirates through Miami or NYC to Dubai. Most comfortable option but add the positioning cost.
Sample Routes
Southeast Asia via Madrid (5 weeks) BOG to Madrid ($550) -- Bangkok ($400 via connection) -- Thailand -- Cambodia -- Vietnam -- Madrid -- BOG Total flights: ~$1100
Southeast Asia via Miami (4 weeks) BOG to Miami ($180) -- Bangkok ($650) -- islands -- Vietnam -- Miami -- BOG Total flights: ~$1000
Cheap Flights from Bogota to North America
Competition from Spirit and JetBlue has made these routes absurdly cheap.
What You'll Actually Pay (USD, Round-Trip)
Miami: $150-280
New York: $200-380
Los Angeles: $280-480
Mexico City: $180-320
Toronto: $350-550
The Airlines That Matter
Spirit -- Ultra-low-cost to US cities. Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, LA. Often under $200 round-trip to South Florida. That's not a typo.
JetBlue -- Good service, competitive pricing. NYC and Fort Lauderdale. Better experience than Spirit for not much more money.
Avianca -- Full service to many US cities with the best connections overall.
Wingo -- Avianca's budget spinoff with growing US routes.
Sample Routes
USA Gateway (1 week) BOG to Miami ($180 Spirit) -- NYC ($80 domestic) -- BOG Total flights: ~$380
Mexico + Central America (4 weeks) BOG to Mexico City ($220) -- Oaxaca -- Guatemala -- Honduras -- Nicaragua -- BOG Total flights: ~$400
Cheap Flights from Bogota to South America
The heart of Avianca's network. This is where Bogota really earns its hub status.
What You'll Actually Pay (USD, Round-Trip)
Lima: $150-300
Quito: $120-250
Buenos Aires: $280-500
Sao Paulo: $300-520
Santiago: $250-450
The Airlines That Matter
Avianca -- Extensive South America network. Often the best pricing to Peru and Ecuador. The home carrier advantage is real here.
LATAM -- Strong alternative, especially for the Southern Cone.
Wingo -- Budget option on select routes. Limited but growing, and the prices can be absurd.
Gateway Strategy
Lima: $150-280 — Peru, Bolivia
Quito: $120-230 — Ecuador, Galapagos
Buenos Aires: $280-450 — Argentina, Uruguay, Chile
Sample Budget Routes
Andean Adventure (5 weeks) BOG to Quito ($150 Avianca) -- Ecuador -- Lima -- Cusco -- La Paz -- BOG Total flights: ~$400
Southern Cone (4 weeks) BOG to Buenos Aires ($320) -- Mendoza -- Santiago -- Valparaiso -- BOG Total flights: ~$550
All of South America (8 weeks) BOG to Lima ($200) -- Cusco -- La Paz -- Buenos Aires ($300) -- Rio ($180) -- BOG Total flights: ~$800
The Bogota Hub Strategy
Here's what smart backpackers do:
Fly into Bogota from the US or Europe
Explore Colombia for 4-6 weeks -- it deserves the time
Use BOG to fly cheaply to your next South American destination
Return via Bogota for the flight home
This takes advantage of Bogota's hub pricing in both directions. You're not backtracking -- you're hub-and-spoking.
6 Things I Learned Flying Out of Bogota
1. The altitude will humble you. Bogota sits at 2,640 meters. Take day one easy. Altitude sickness is real and it doesn't care how fit you are. Drink water, eat light, save the aguardiente for day two.
2. Avianca LifeMiles add up. If you're doing lots of South America, accumulating Avianca LifeMiles status can pay off with upgrades and benefits. The program is decent.
3. Watch Wingo like a hawk. Avianca's budget spinoff drops absurdly cheap fares with little warning. Worth monitoring even if you don't have plans yet.
4. Consider positioning to Medellin. MDE handles significant international traffic now, and some routes are cheaper from there. A quick domestic hop opens different options.
5. TransMilenio works but hurts. The bus system will get you to the airport for nothing. It's also packed, confusing, and slow during rush hour. For early flights, just take a taxi -- $6 is worth your sanity.
6. La Candelaria is your base. Budget accommodation in the historic center with easy TransMilenio access to the airport. The hostels are good, the street food is better.
