Thomas GriggsCheap Flights from Santiago, Chile in 2026: A Backpacker's Playbook
I was drinking a carmenere in a Bellavista wine bar, watching the sun go down behind the Andes -- the whole cordillera lit up pink and orange -- and I thought: this is a city that deserves more credit. Santiago is clean, efficient, well-connected, and sitting at the feet of one of the greatest mountain ranges on earth. And LATAM's home base means the airport punches way above its weight for a city this far south.
Then JetSMART showed up and changed everything. Buenos Aires for $50 one-way. Lima for $100. The budget carrier revolution in South America started right here, and if you're doing the Southern Cone, Santiago is your operations center.
Santiago Airport: Modern, Efficient, Easy
SCL (Arturo Merino Benitez International)
Everything runs through here -- LATAM's home hub
Airlines you care about: LATAM, JetSMART, Sky Airline, Iberia, Air France, American, KLM
Getting there: Bus Centropuerto to city center (~$2,000 CLP, 30-45 min)
My take: SCL is modern and easy to navigate. One of the most efficient airports in South America. You won't find the chaos of Lima or Bogota here. Chilean organization is real.
Cheap Flights from Santiago to Europe
Strong direct connections to Madrid, growing to other cities. But Santiago is far -- fares run higher than from Colombia or Brazil.
What You'll Actually Pay (USD, Round-Trip)
Jan-Mar: $700-1050 — $780-920
Apr-Jun: $600-900 — $680-800
Jul-Aug: $650-950 — $720-850
Sep-Nov: $600-900 — $680-800
The Airlines That Matter
LATAM -- SCL to Madrid direct. Also routes via Sao Paulo to other European cities. As the home carrier, they have the most options and run the best sales from Santiago.
Iberia -- SCL to Madrid direct. Good connections throughout Spain. The Madrid route has two carriers competing, which keeps prices honest.
Air France -- SCL to Paris direct. Your Northern Europe gateway with CDG hub connections.
KLM -- Via Amsterdam, sometimes direct, sometimes via Buenos Aires. Good for Northern Europe.
British Airways -- Via Sao Paulo to London. Not direct but workable.
Gateway Strategy
Madrid: $650-900 — Spain, Portugal, Morocco
Paris: $700-950 — France, all connections
Sao Paulo + Europe: $600-850 — More flexibility, TAP option
Sample Budget Routes
Spain + Portugal (3 weeks) SCL to Madrid ($700 LATAM) -- Andalucia -- Lisbon -- Porto -- Madrid -- SCL Total flights: ~$820
Europe via Brazil (4 weeks) SCL to Sao Paulo ($200) -- Lisbon ($500 TAP) -- Barcelona -- Rome -- Lisbon -- Sao Paulo -- SCL Total flights: ~$850
Cheap Flights from Santiago to Southeast Asia
Very long journey from Chile. But Santiago has one routing that nobody else in South America can match.
What You'll Actually Pay (USD, Round-Trip)
All Year: $1200-1800 — $1350-1550
How to Route It
Via Auckland (the interesting one) -- LATAM flies SCL to Auckland direct. Add a New Zealand stopover, continue to Sydney, then budget carriers to Southeast Asia. You'll fly across the Pacific instead of backtracking to the Northern Hemisphere. It's longer, but you see more of the world.
Via US West Coast -- SCL to LA or SFO, then Asia. More connections, more conventional routing.
Via Europe -- SCL to Madrid, then connect to Asia. Longer but can include a Europe stopover.
Sample Route
Southeast Asia via Pacific (5 weeks) SCL to Auckland ($800) -- Sydney ($200) -- Bali ($250) -- Thailand -- Vietnam -- back via similar Total flights: ~$1400
Cheap Flights from Santiago to North America
LATAM and American compete well on these routes.
What You'll Actually Pay (USD, Round-Trip)
Miami: $450-700
Los Angeles: $500-800
New York: $500-850

Sky Airline -- Chilean budget carrier. Good domestic and regional options. Between Sky and JetSMART, you have real competition.
LATAM -- Full service to everywhere. More expensive but more included and more reliable.

Lima: $150-300 — Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador
Mendoza: $60-120 — Wine country, Argentine crossing

The Patagonia Play
Most backpackers do it like this:
Fly SCL to Punta Arenas (or Puerto Natales when available)
Bus and trek through Torres del Paine
Cross the border to El Calafate, Argentina
Fly back from Argentina or bus north
6 Things I Learned Flying Out of Santiago
1. JetSMART changed the game. This budget carrier has made South American travel fundamentally more accessible. Check their prices before any other airline. Always.
2. Wine valley before your flight. Maipo and Casablanca valleys are day-trip distance from Santiago. Spend your last day doing a wine tasting, then head to the airport. It's the civilized way to leave.
3. Santiago is basically sea level. Unlike Bogota (2,640m) or La Paz (3,640m), Santiago sits at just 520m. No altitude adjustment needed. One less thing to worry about.
4. Winter smog is real. May through August can have bad air quality when the temperature inversion traps pollution against the Andes. If you have respiratory concerns, check conditions.
5. The Mendoza bus is a thing. Crossing the Andes by bus to Mendoza takes about 6 hours and the views are extraordinary. From Mendoza, you access different Argentine flights than from Buenos Aires.
6. Easter Island -- if ever, then from here. Rapa Nui is only accessible by air from Santiago. There's nowhere else to easily route from. If it's on your list, add it to a Chile trip. It's $300-600 round-trip and one of the most remote places on earth.
