Budget Tiers
What does your daily budget actually get you? Here's how far your money stretches in this region.

$20–$30/day
Bolivia remains the cheapest country in South America by a wide margin — dorm beds for $5–$10, almuerzo completo for $1.50–$2.50, and local minibus rides under $0.50. Guatemala and Nicaragua offer similar value in Central America. At this tier, you're eating where locals eat, taking chicken buses, and staying in basic but clean hospedajes.
Comfortable
$25–$45/day
The sweet spot for most backpackers. Colombia and Mexico deliver strong value at this range — private rooms in well-rated hostels, menu del dia lunches, and enough budget for a walking tour or museum entry. Cusco runs slightly higher due to tourist-economy pricing near the Plaza de Armas, but surrounding neighborhoods bring costs back in line.
Splurge
$45–$70/day
Southern Cone cities and resort areas push daily costs closer to Southern European levels. Buenos Aires fluctuates with the peso — it can swing between $40 and $65/day depending on the parallel exchange rate. Cancun's hotel zone inflates averages, but the centro keeps accommodation 40–50% cheaper. Santiago is consistently the priciest capital in South America for backpackers.

Classic Routes
Well-trodden backpacker corridors with estimated total costs including accommodation, food, and local transport.
The Gringo Trail
The continental backbone route from Mexico to Bolivia. Two flights are unavoidable (Guatemala to Colombia, Lima to La Paz or overland via bus), but surface transport handles the rest. Daily costs average $28–$35 across the full route, with Bolivia pulling the average down significantly. The biggest variable is pace — rushing it adds flight costs.
Patagonia Express
Southern Cone route best done during SA summer (Dec–Feb) when Patagonia is accessible. Bus networks between Chile and Argentina are reliable but long — Santiago to Bariloche is 18+ hours. El Calafate (Perito Moreno glacier) is the priciest stop at $50–$60/day. Buenos Aires bookends the trip with cheaper accommodation and strong food value.
Central America Loop
Overland-friendly route through Mexico and Central America with no flights required. Guatemala and Nicaragua are the budget anchors at $28–$30/day. Costa Rica is the outlier — expect $40–$55/day minimum, which is why many backpackers treat San Jose as an exit point rather than a destination. Chicken buses and colectivos keep transport costs under $150 total.
